Lloret de Mar History: Despite it's appearance as a modern day holiday resort, Lloret de Mar has a long history which you may find interesting. Probably first settled in around the 4th to 3rd centuries BC by the Iberians, the early inhabitants of the area would have traded with Rome and Greece. Settlements at Puig de Castellet and Montbarat were already well established by the time the Romans arrived to conquer the Iberian Peninsular. The Romans founded a trading post in the area of what is now modern day Lloret de Mar.
The name 'Lloret' was probably first used during the 10th century AD and may derive from the Latin Lauretum (place of laurels).
The actual town was established in 1001 AD and the building of some fortifications began including the Castell de Sant Joan, which served as both a refuge and watchtower for the local inhabitants. The first church was also established in Lloret in the form of the Sant Roma which later became known as the Nostra Senyora de las Alegries.
The early inhabitants of the town were mostly involved with fishing though some early trade of timber and charcoal was also carried out, they are thought to have traded with places as far off as the Italian coast, and some Italian influence can still be found in the customs and names of Lloret de Mar, today.
A new parish church was built in the 16th century in the Catalan Gothic style, this was to some extent fortified to provide extra protection for citizens of the town.
After the inception of the Free Trade Decree in the 18th century, Lloret de Mar flourished as a naval and shipbuilding town with many of its local mariners sailing to, and trading with the Americas, in particular Cuba and Argentina. This later lead to many of Lloret's inhabitants emigrating to the New World in search of fame and fortune, some later returned as wealthy men and they became known as 'Americanos'. This in turn lead to the town becoming wealthy and many mansions and elegant houses were built in the town.
An emerging tourist industry in the 1930's was cut short by the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), but by the 1950's tourism began to grow as the main source of income for the town, the boom in the 1970's and 1980's saw huge increases of tourists to the resort as cheaper flights brought large numbers of visitors from the UK and northern Europe.
